University of Puget Sound – Programs and Resource Optimization (PRO)

Stevens Strategy partnered with the University of Puget Sound to conduct a comprehensive academic and administrative program review through its Programs and Resource Optimization (PRO) process. The engagement provided a university-wide analysis of mission alignment, program quality, market demand, and financial performance, supporting Puget Sound’s efforts to enhance strategic planning and resource allocation.

Using a data-driven framework and a highly collaborative process that engaged faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees, Stevens Strategy evaluated every academic department and non-academic cost center to identify opportunities for financial sustainability, program growth, and operational efficiency. The project helped the institution clarify priorities, strengthen market responsiveness, and make informed, evidence-based decisions about its academic portfolio and administrative structure.

The final report delivered a comprehensive set of strategic recommendations designed to help Puget Sound achieve long-term institutional resilience. These included targeted faculty and program realignments to streamline operations, the development of a new College of Graduate Studies to expand academic offerings, and initiatives to improve student retention and belonging, such as a proposed residential community for students of color. The review also included operational efficiency recommendations across auxiliary units—such as athletics, student services, and the campus store—ensuring that every investment supported the university’s mission and its long-term strategic and financial goals.
